📝 Notes
The path to achieving decarbonization goals and ultimately a net-zero Commonwealth faces a challenge: the arduous and lengthy process of upgrading the local and regional electric grid and permitting new energy infrastructure. The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law lay the financial incentives and support to expand ambitious infrastructure investments that can usher in a clean energy future. But projects typically encounter an uncertain fate on the ground, including a maze of litigation and unnecessary permitting delays that are making climate goals increasingly difficult to meet.
The permitting reform challenge involves balancing critical review processes that ensure equitable stakeholder participation with the urgency to upgrade current infrastructure and install the next generation equipment. As Massachusetts considers reforms designed to streamline energy infrastructure regulation, join the State House News Service for an important panel discussion on this critical policy issue with Massachusetts energy leaders, advocates, and key legislators.

Surveys show that teachers, students and the American public at large all agree that climate change should be taught in schools. Yet only a minority of teachers include climate change in their coursework, and those who do are often unsupported by the curricula, standards and policies that guide their instruction.
In this event, specialists in K-12 climate education will discuss the benefits of climate education in a variety of courses at the high school level and earlier, and the challenges teachers face in finding or creating appropriate climate coursework and bringing it to their classrooms. They will introduce resources for teaching climate, best practices from schools and educational institutions around the U.S., and new ideas to support teachers at every level, and take audience questions.
This event is part of the People, Prosperity and the Planet lecture series produced by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.
Speakers:
Margaret Wang, Chief Operating Officer, Subject To Climate. Subject To Climate is on a mission to make climate change teaching and learning accessible to all, by connecting educators to resources and collaborating with local stakeholders to meet their climate education needs. Prior to joining Subject To Climate, Wang studied and worked at Harvard Graduate School of Education, conducting research in education policy as well as sustainability education, and has been an economics and social studies teacher and a product manager in an edtech company.
Dr. Lauren Madden, The College of New Jersey. Dr. Madden is a science educator who advocates for scientific literacy and the health of our planet through teaching and learning. She is currently the Principal Investigator on a US EPA grant, Ecoteachers: Protecting Waters and Connecting Minds which provides professional development for local teachers focused on integrating environmental education across the curriculum. She is active in the Hunterdon, Somerset, and Mercer County STEM Ecosystem and enjoys leading professional development that connects teachers around STEM.
Alice Fan, Schools Coordinator, Spring Forward. Spring Forward is a high school student-led organization whose goal is to ensure all students understand the basic science, history, and far-reaching consequences of climate change, and give them the tools and resources to make the right choices in their daily life. Fan, a Spring Forward co-founder, is a senior at Phillips Academy Andover in Andover, Massachusetts, and has been a student climate advocate in a variety of organizations and campaigns.
Sylvia Scharf, Climate Education Specialist, MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative (moderator). Scharf's work focuses on teacher use of the Environmental Solutions Initiatives’s public-facing climate change materials, especially the podcast TILclimate (Today I Learned: Climate) and the MIT Climate Portal. Before joining ESI, Sylvia was at New England Aquarium, where she honed her climate change communication skills with teachers, teens, staff, and the general public.

Final of the MIT Climate and Energy Prize, the world's largest student-led competition for climate startups
The MIT Climate & Energy Prize competition seeks to move the world closer to net zero carbon emissions by empowering ambitious entrepreneurs to solve the world’s most difficult climate-related challenges.
We are the largest and longest-running competition for student-led climate startups in the world. Since its founding in 2007, the MIT Climate & Energy Prize has received more than 750 applications, offered world-class mentoring to over 260 teams, and granted more than $3.3M in non-dilutive cash prizes. Teams compete for $100,000+ in prize money and have access to mentoring and other resources. Over 220 MIT Climate & Energy Prize companies have successfully launched and raised $1.7+ billion in follow-on funding.
During the final round, teams of student entrepreneurs will present their business plans and prototypes to a panel of judges and a live audience, who will then evaluate the teams based on criteria such as the potential impact of their solution, the feasibility of their business model, and the strength of their team. The final round is a significant opportunity for these teams to showcase their solutions to a broad audience and gain recognition in the industry.

America's Big Year of Climate Action: A TILclimate Liveshow - MIT Events

🕓 End time
4/19/2023 Wed 11:00 AM
📝 Notes
The first liveshow from MIT's award-winning TILclimate podcast welcomes Dr. Elisabeth Reynolds to break down America's big new climate investments.
Between November 2021 and August 2022, the United States passed a series of bills featuring the largest investments in climate change solutions in history. But the size of these investments is not the whole story. They also commit the U.S. to a new approach to climate: creating large consumer markets, demonstrating new technologies quickly, and manufacturing at a massive scale at home.
Join MIT's TILclimate podcast for our first live event, as host Laur Hesse Fisher sits down with Dr. Elisabeth Reynolds—Lecturer in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning, former Special Assistant to the President for Manufacturing and Economic Development in the White House, and a partner in the investment firm Unless focused on industrial transformation—to understand the new course of American climate action, why it came about, and what it means for the U.S. and the world moving forward.
The show will take place from 11:00 to 12:30 with time for audience questions, and will be followed by a light lunch for all attendees.
Hosted by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, with support from the MIT Climate Nucleus. Presented as part of Earth Month at MIT.
