📝 Notes
In environmental lawsuits and regulatory proceedings, attorneys and their clients routinely rely on the scientific, technical, or other specialized knowledge of expert witnesses to communicate complicated subjects and technical information to the trier of fact. Due to the complex nature of issues involved in environmental lawsuits and regulatory proceedings, expert witnesses invariably play a critical role in assisting attorneys to develop and present their cases and to meet applicable burdens of proof. Therefore, it is imperative that experts present information and testimony that is credible, truthful, and ethical, while also advancing the interests of the client – an undoubtedly daunting task for the uninitiated. Further, environmental professionals serving as consultants in seemingly non-adversarial environmental matters, for example an environmental engineer managing a hazardous waste remediation project, may find themselves unexpectedly called to testify in related litigation or enforcement cases, often years later.
At this EBC Ascending Professionals Webinar, a range of panelists consisting of attorneys, consultants, and expert witnesses will discuss strategies for preparing for and presenting effective and credible expert testimony. Panelists will also discuss, among other topics, the roles expert witnesses play in varied environmental regulatory proceedings, practice pointers for preserving legal privileges and confidentiality in adversarial proceedings, and guidance for younger professionals when hired, or called on, to serve as expert witnesses.

📝 Notes
Technological innovation plays a vital role in addressing the challenges and complexities of climate change. This EBC Lunchtime Webinar Series developed by the EBC Climate Change and Air Committee highlights innovative tools to address climate change mitigation and adaptation needs for your projects. Led by industry experts, this webinar series will include a walk-through of each tool’s inputs and outputs, interface, use cases, and project case studies. The presentation series covers topics such as resilience planning, flood hazard mapping, greenhouse gas reduction, fleet transition management, and more.
A robust Q&A discussion with the audience will conclude each webinar.
Series Schedule
The Resilient MA Action Team (RMAT) Climate Resilience Design Standards Tool – Wednesday, November 30, 2022
Fleet Electrification Tool – Wednesday, December 7, 2022
Please continue to check the EBC Programs & Events page for additional details about the full series.
Part Two
For this second webinar in the series, fleet electrification is highlighted with an innovative tool called Fleet Max to support fleet owners in transitioning to a zero-emission fleet. Michael Grant, Senior Transit/Transportation Planner, and Matt Palzkill, Senior Transportation Engineer, of Jacobs will provide an overview of Fleet Max and showcase project case studies where the tool has been used.
Fleet Max is a key element of Jacobs’ Green Fleets approach, evaluating service performance and power demands of eBus fleets using real-world data. Fleet Max uses transit schedule data and route profiles for speed, ridership, and elevation to calculate the energy requirements of the system. Based on model scenario variables like bus type, battery size, and charging power options, the model simulates vehicle movements, energy usage, and battery charging at a stop-to-stop level for all the routes in a daily schedule. The resulting outputs demonstrate the successes and failures of the transit service while obtaining metrics for bus count, charger count, peak power profiles, and overall energy consumption. The Fleet Max model is critical for simulating complex transit service to help minimize capital costs and operating expenses.
The audience will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and dive deeper into the tool at the end of the webinar.

EBC Water Resources Webinar: PFAS Series Part II – PFAS in Drinking Water and Wastewater - Environmental Business Council of New England, Inc.
🕑 Start time
12/8/2022 Thu 9:00 AM
🕓 End time
12/8/2022 Thu 11:30 AM
📍Location
Virtual
📝 Notes
Public drinking water suppliers have been at the leading edge of dealing with the PFAS crisis. Just as systems were getting accustomed to the testing protocols and treatment regimes, ever decreasing (proposed) standards and advisories have ushered in a new period of uncertainty. As the regulatory net widens, additional public works facilities, including wastewater treatment plants, are also going to have their turn in the regulatory hot seat.
In conjunction with Part I of the EBC PFAS Series, PFAS in Solid Waste, which will address the dearth of disposal options across different media, and Part III, PFAS Management – Is it Risky Business?, this Water Resources program will survey the potential fallout from EPA’s proposal to list PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under CERCLA and the draft regulations on medium-sized POTWs that would impose reporting obligations on all sending facilities. As these changes in federal regulations trickle down to the states, local water and wastewater system operators are once against thrust into the vanguard of assessing and ameliorating the impacts from these pervasive compounds.
A robust panel discussion with the audience will conclude the webinar.

The Climate Adaptation Forum is a collaboration between the Environmental Business Council and the Sustainable Solutions Lab at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Flooding risks, sea level rise, storm surges, and extreme heat are accelerating with a changing climate. Ecosystems are also at risk, along with the social, economic, and environmental benefits they provide. Nature-based climate adaptation approaches offer opportunities to bring people into greater harmony with ecology, secure and enhance ecosystem services for future generations, and cost-effectively reduce some flooding risks. Funders, regulators, adaptation professionals, and the public now view nature-based adaptation as no longer an aspiration, but a priority or requirement. Pilot projects are being scaled up to billions of oysters, miles of shoreline, and hectares of wetlands. But how feasible and effective are they? And how do we effectively regulate and build the capacity to plan and implement them at scales that match the urgency of risks, speed of climate changes, and our own expectations? Join us to learn about the opportunities and barriers to scaling up nature-based approaches to climate adaptation, from planning to permitting to implementation.
